Carmina Burana

Midi’s
For those in need of a few note checks, Carlos has put downloadable midi files for Carmina Burana on the members only section of the San Jose Symphonic Choir website. The files are in zip file format (just because there are so many of them). If you have problems or would like them in a different format contact Chris Brown. You can listen to the files using Microsoft Mediaplayer, Quicktime, or iTunes. There are also several free players such as Notation Player or Noteworthy Player which actually show the music score and words while playing the music.

Bus to San Mateo

We are investigating hiring a bus for the dress rehearsal and concert in San Mateo and would like to know how many people would be interested to utilizing that service. Please let Stephen Ferro know by EOD Monday your intent on taking the bus on both or either days. ($20 per trip).

Hi,

Someone spoke to me on Monday about volunteering at the concert – they had 2 daughters but it was Nicole Deane who might volunteer. I can’t connect Nicole with a choir member ‘cos I can’t remember who I was talking to!!

It’s OK to laugh :) Whoever I was talking to, please reply to this.

Thanks,

Sonja

Dale Victorine’s “The Road Not Taken” for 3/20

10 03 2009

Dear Sotto Voce members:  Dale E. Victorine’s piece entitled The Road Not Taken,  which is based on a poem by Robert Frost has been added by request for the Friday, March 20th concert.  I have asked Bill Downes to copy 46 copies hoping that that will cover those who did not have it from the NCCUSA concert we did back in 2002 or 2003 in Palo Alto.  We will have to run through it at the end of rehearsals on Monday, March 16th.  The piece is not difficult either in rhythmic organization nor in its tonality (minor/ major tonal system).  It probably won’t take more than 10 or 15 minutes to rehearse.  I also would suggest we run it again on the March 18th rehearsal at St. Joseph’s Cathedral.

Don D’Angelo

Practice MIDI Files ONLINE

9 03 2009

Practice MIDI files for the Requiem for Lost Children have been created by Chris Brown and posted in the Members section of our website by Carlos Soriano.

Tim Anderson

For a Mac, once you are Member Info section and click on Midi Files, Click on the Chris’ files individually a drag them to the desktop.  Click on theme again and the midi will begin in Quick Time.

On 2/16/09 11:52 AM, “Timothy Anderson” <tjohnanderson@att.net> wrote:Chris Brown has created the following practice MIDI files for Flight Through The Stars:

  • The Shape of the Dream
  • The Patron and the Dream
  • The Inquisition
  • Finale

Carlos has posted these files on http://sanjosesymphonicchoir.org/
To access them, go to the Member Info section, log in, and click the “MIDI FILES” link.

The MIDI files can be played from the website, usually just by clicking on the file you want.  I expect that your default MIDI player will then open and begin playing the music.

The files can also be downloaded to your computer, saved, and played.  On a PC, this is done by right-clicking the name of the file and selecting “Save target as …” from the menu that pops up.  I don’t know how it works on a Macintosh, but Bill Downes may know.

Sonia Cook Seeks Ushers

9 03 2009

Hi All,

I am once again offering ushering opportunities for our next concert on Sat. March 21 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, SJ.

I will need 8 volunteers in total, 6 for ticket / ushering duties & 2 for sales of CDs. Each volunteer will receive one comp. ticket to the concert. I took into account the comments I received from the last volunteer crew, so have increased the staffing to 8 & will provide boxes for the ticket stubs. That will give us 3 people on each door.

Call time for you would be 6.45 p.m. for the 8 p.m. concert. From the wait list of people who got bumped last time, I have 5 volunteers. Therefore, I need 3 more + 2 alternates. If you have someone who could help us, please Email your reply or see me at choir tomorrow.

Thanks,

Sonja Cook

Leroy answers Questions

1 03 2009

Dear Choir members

As March unfolds this weekend, we are now within close range of our big upcoming concert. I would like to answer a few questions that have popped up about it as well as some other upcoming concerts.

When and where is the concert?

The concert is Saturday evening, March 21 at Saint Joseph Cathedral Basilica in San Jose–concert time is 8 PM and call time is 7 PM with set-up occurring well before call time.

When and where are the dress rehearsals?

There are two rehearsals with orchestra, soloists and Vivace Children’s Chorus. The first is Monday, March 16 at 7 PM at the Church of the Ascension in Saratoga located at the corner of Prospect and Miller. The second and final rehearsal is Wednesday night, March 18 at the Cathedral, also at 7 PM. Remember, dress rehearsal does not mean you come dressed in concert attire. Wear casual and comfortable attire for the dress rehearsals, not formalwear.

Could you let us all know (by email or announcement) the length of each half of the concert?

The first half of the concert consists of a short solo piece by John Musto sung by Justin Smith, followed by the Requiem for Lost Children. I would estimate the length to be around 45 minutes. Then after a fifteen minute intermission, the second half will consist of Flight Through the Stars (minus the Lunar Lament movement) which should take another 40 minutes. At this point, these are the only three pieces on the program.

What about the concert on March 15 featuring the Five Mystical Songs?

Particularly those singers who performed the Five Mystical Songs with Nathan Gunn a few years ago, you are cordially invited to sing this Vaughan Williams’ treasure once again on Sunday, March 15 with the Saratoga Symphony and singers from Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, Monterey Symphony Chorus, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, and Stone Church of Willow Glen. Rehearsals are Thursday, March 5 from 7:30-9:30 and dress rehearsal with orchestra and soloist, Justin Smith is Thursday, March 12, 7:30-9:30, both rehearsals and concert are at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in Saratoga. Concert is Sunday, March 15 at 3 PM. Bring the scores you purchased, or scores will be provided. The piece is about twenty minutes in length. Either concert attire or white and black will be worn.

When will we start rehearsing Carmina Burana?

As is our custom, we will be taking a break Monday night, Monday, March 23–no rehearsal that evening. Carmina rehearsals will begin the following Monday, March 30 at our regular time and venue.

What is happening on Friday morning, March 20?

Maestro Leroy Kromm

Maestro Leroy Kromm

In past years, we have been able to perform for school-aged children through an organization called Arts Express. This form of outreach not only provides an important informance-type concert for children, but helps the choir receive grant funding because of community service being performed. This year on Friday morning, March 20, we are privileged to sing a program for many busloads of kids at the California Theater. There will be one performance at 10 AM and it is scheduled to last ninety minutes. Due to the length of program, we will be devoting a significant portion of our next two rehearsals to preparing music (much of the former tour music) for this outreach concert. Any and all singers who can come to help out with this important program are asked to reserve Friday morning, March 20–call time 9 AM. This should be very thrilling to be able to sing at the California Theater.

I’ll see you Monday evening; we will take a short time to review in sectionals the portions needing a little more work. And by 9 PM we will be rehearsing the California Theater program for March 20. Your presence is appreciated.

Leroy
